RIA Development with Adobe Flex and Flash

Bringing together Flex, Java and DBMS

The main goal of many enterprise applications is to provide a way to manipulate some data. Flex provides not only a rich library of UI components, but also a fast binary protocols that allow to efficiently move data between the server and the efficiently. In this presentation you’ll learn how to bring the data form a database using Java and BlazeDS in the middle tier. We’ll consider two use cases – manual coding and auto-generation of a CRUD application.

About the speaker

Yakov Fain is Managing Director at Farata Systems, a US-based company that provides consulting services in the field of development of enterprise Rich Internet applications. He authored several technical books, and dozens of articles on software development. Recently he co-authored the books “Rich Internet Applications with Adobe Flex and Java: Secrets of the Masters” and “Enterprise Development with Flex”. Sun Microsystems has nominated and awarded Mr. Fain with the title of Java Champion, which was presented to only a hundred people in the world. He leads the Princton Java Users Group. Yakov is Certified Adobe Flex Instructor.

Learn how to integrate the RobotLegs MVCS framework on top of the Gaia Flash Framework. While Gaia is known for creating high profile sites like Mercedes Benz: AMG, Star Trek Movie, and Disney’s the Jungle Book, it does not provide a business and application layer. When creating Enterprise sites ones like HBO, FordVehicles, and Hyundia a framework is needed for integrating all the dynamic data from the middle-tier, as well as having a layer to handling the domain logic.

Jesse will build an example site using Gaia, show you how to integrate RobotLegs on top of Gaia, and explain the workflow with a little continuous integration advice.

Jesse Warden is a Flex & Flash Consultant. He’s worked on a variety of Flash & Flex projects, from small to Enterprise. He specializes in Agile processes, video, architecture, and disaster recovery. His art and agency background has given him an appreciation for design and a pragmatic viewpoint on development. Big news just announced if you are interested in Adobe LiveCycle Data Services. Adobe just released a full version of Adobe LiveCycle ES hosted in the Amazon Web Services cloud computing environment. This service is now available to subscribers of the Adobe Enterprise Developer Program.  A subscription also provides Developers, Architects & Forms Designers with support, software and tools to build and deploy enterprise solutions built on a SOA, leveraging Adobe technologies. You can build engaging Rich Internet Applications using Flex Builder and/or Adobe AIR while deploying back end processes using Adobe LiveCycle ES. This service includes access to a support team which provides you with technical assistance, best practices, and recommended workarounds when issues arise during coding and programming.

Adobe has now released AIR 1.5 which is the second significant update to the AIR runtime since its debut on February 25, 2008. The developer community response to AIR has been outstanding with more and more applications appearing every day. With over 260 applications on the Adobe AIR Marketplace and well over 25 million installations of applications deployed using Adobe AIR. Some of the new features in this release include, encrypted local database, Flash Player 10 capabilities, better SEO Search Engine Optimization, and WebKit update.

It is always entertaining to see the end of year Google search results as the post the zeitgeist information for the world to see. Interestingly enough - the “what is” category ranks “love” and “life” only above JAVA!?

I suppose that most of the world already know what Flex and ColdFusion are … but JAVA is still a mystery for most. And we are all still working on the best SEO Strategies for the Flash Player.

Adobe has publically announced that it will launch an update to its flagship Creative Suite software bundle on 23 September. The company has offered few details of the planned Creative Suite 4 (C4) release. The current iteration of the suite, CS3, is offered in several configurations that include various combinations of the company’s core applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Acrobat and InDesign. Adobe Flex Builder 3 is gaining attention as this software continues to improve with each release. This article from InfoWorld has a lot of great things to say about the latest release. Some of the new features that are mentioned include better visual layout tools and more control over CSS, new wizards for WSDL introspection and back-end data connectivity, and plug-ins that augment workflow between developers and design teams.
